The Background

Design Process

Art venues are proactively seeking new ways to engage viewers. The question, 'How can we make the continuously changing, vibrant displays of art and design at the RISD Museum accessible to all?' paved way for the growth of extensive community engagement through immersive 3D experiences, with Augmented/Virtual Reality standing as a portal to experiences available at any given moment.

AR emulates the sensation of observing an art piece outside of its typical gallery or museum setting, placing it into any chosen environment at will. By digitally mapping the Grand Gallery in the museum, we managed to reproduce the space in a three-dimensional format, accessible via AR gateways that could be located virtually anywhere the audience’s phone cameras could aim at.

Once set up, all that remains is walking through the gateway to immerse oneself in everything the space has to offer. The artworks were each recorded in high definition and pieced together to allow observation of the most intricate details. The ambiance of the room was mirrored using a blend of actual textures and vector-based illustrations, creating a flawless environment.
